A Modular Utility Solution for a Pet Food Facility’s Expansion

Going Modular Solves Many Challenges

Embarking on a major expansion, one U.S. pet food manufacturer chose a modular utility solution for its existing production facility. The new production space required: 400 TR chilled water, hydronic pumping and controls, compressed air system, and a custom enclosure.

With its design-build services, Systecon provided a custom modular central utility plant (CUP) to fit the pet food company’s limited footprint.

The modular CUP solved many concerns for logistics, safety, and schedule among other things. Faced with ongoing challenges in scheduling, labor force, footprint, and constructability/weather conditions, the customer's selection of a modular CUP drove successful project delivery for their existing pet food facility’s 80,000 SF expansion.

A Central Utility Plant Installed in Three Modules

Systecon provided a fully enclosed central utility plant that got installed in three module sections. The modular CUP was fabricated and assembled in parallel to site construction activities, aligning for significant savings in labor and duration for the field installation period.

Installation Savings:

  • 70% reduction on installation schedule.
  • Modules installed and connected to utilities within 2 weeks in lieu of 3-4 months for field-built mechanical room.
  • 80% reduction in field labor required for installation.

CUP Components:

  • Centrifugal Chillers, Chilled Water pumps & controls (390 Tons)
  • Condenser water pumps & controls, remote sump storage (435 Tons)
  • Compressed Air, Ventilation, Refrigerant Monitoring
  • ETL listed product with PLC Controls

As with any of our projects, Systecon’s design/engineering, speed of modular manufacturing of a quality product, limited footprint at the job site, and testing of utilities before shipping all bring value to the customer and ensure successful delivery.
